As mentioned above, the collect helper returns a new  Illuminate\Support\Collection instance for the given array.

So, creating a collection is as simple as:

$collection = collect([1, 2, 3]);

Create Laravel Collection

We will work with this demo example.

<?php

namespace App\Http\Controllers;

use Illuminate\Http\Request;

class SampleController extends Controller
{
    public function usersCollection()
    {
        $userCollection = collect([
            [
                'id' => 1,
                'name' => 'User 1',
                'email' => 'user1@gmail.com'
            ],
            [
                'id' => 2,
                'name' => 'User 2',
                'email' => 'user2@gmail.com'
            ],
            [
                'id' => 3,
                'name' => 'User 3',
                'email' => 'user3@gmail.com'
            ],
            [
                'id' => 4,
                'name' => 'User 4',
                'email' => 'user4@gmail.com'
            ]
        ]);

        //...
    }
}

Next,

We will use methods of collection which helps us to get first and last user value from this collection.

Get Collection First Item

To get first item value from collection, we will use first() method.

$first = $collection->first();

Get Collection Last Item

$last = $collection->last();

We will create an user collection. From user collection we will fetch the first and last user value.

<?php

namespace App\Http\Controllers;

use Illuminate\Http\Request;

class SampleController extends Controller
{
    public function usersCollection()
    {
        $userCollection = collect([
            [
                'id' => 1,
                'name' => 'User 1',
                'email' => 'user1@gmail.com'
            ],
            [
                'id' => 2,
                'name' => 'User 2',
                'email' => 'user2@gmail.com'
            ],
            [
                'id' => 3,
                'name' => 'User 3',
                'email' => 'user3@gmail.com'
            ],
            [
                'id' => 4,
                'name' => 'User 4',
                'email' => 'user4@gmail.com'
            ]
        ]);

        $first = $collection->first();

        $last = $collection->last();

        echo "<pre>";
        print_r($first);
        print_r($last);
    }
}
